'' I just loved hearing the pupils expand their awareness of the problems - it was so inspiring, in a world where many people bury their heads in the sand about these issues! The room was buzzing with passionate ideas from excited year 7s. From community gardening, to clothing recycling schemes. There were ideas for apps, posters, robots, litter picking groups, community walking groups, plant more trees, create greener streets for cleaner air ''

Everything you need to know...

What is a Design Sprint?

The YGBC Design Sprint is a ½ - 1 day workshop delivered to a whole year group of students and led by our experienced YGBC team. We take teams of students through a series of fun, fast-paced activities where they rapidly identify the climate problem they wish to address (e.g. food waste in the school canteen, fast fashion habits among teens) then design and pitch their solution!

What skills are we looking for?

This opportunity is ideal for someone who can help students work through the activities of the workshop through their positive energy, asking and answering questions and bringing their knowledge and expertise to support students in developing their ideas.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Supporting our team to guide students through Design Sprint activities - offering feedback and encouragement to teams of students (whole year groups aged between 11-16)

  • Challenge students to think creatively and practically about their solution’s purpose and features, and encourage them to work as a team

  • Ask and answer questions from students  to help teams maintain progress throughout the workshop, and to think critically about their idea

  • Support teachers and our team to maintain a positive environment for everyone

Other information:

  • The YGBC team will be in charge of running the workshop with your support to engage students around the room.

  • All activities will be supervised by teaching staff

  • Volunteers are not required to present or to speak in front of the whole year group (unless you want to!) except to briefly introduce yourself at the start of the workshop

  • All volunteers need to undergo a DBS Check - our team will support with this process

Time Commitment:

  • 1 day during school hours (8:30am - 3:30pm)

  • Various dates from October 2024 - February 2025

  • In-person only at schools across London & South East, Yorkshire, North West and North West England
