Climate Justice Programme

Helping young people understand the links between the climate crisis and social injustice, and giving them the tools to respond.

The climate crisis does not affect everyone equally. In this workshop, young people explore what climate justice means in practice, who is most affected, why, and how those patterns connect to the wider systems shaping their own lives and communities.

The Issue

The climate crisis is also a social justice crisis.

The climate crisis and social injustice are not separate issues. Communities across the ‘Global South’ are least responsible for driving the climate crisis yet are consistently the most exposed to its consequences, from extreme weather and food insecurity to displacement and loss of livelihood.

But this is not just a global story. Here in the UK, the impacts fall unevenly too. Low income communities are more exposed to poor air quality, fuel poverty and flooding, with fewer resources to adapt or recover. The climate crisis does not create these inequalities. It deepens the ones that already exist.

Designed and delivered by young people, for young people

In collaboration with the UK Youth Climate Coalition (UKYCC), a UK youth group that mobilises and empowers young people to take positive action for global climate justice.

UKYCC is a voluntary, consensus-led, non-hierarchy, and non-profit organisation. Their members are based UK-wide.

About the Programme

In this programme, young people will:

  • Examine the disproportionate effects of the climate crisis, globally and here in the UK, through real world examples that make the scale of the issue concrete and close to home.

  • Develop the critical thinking skills to ask harder questions about power, fairness and what a more just response might look like.

  • Then use a practical framework to design their own grassroots campaigns to put into action in their schools and communities.

How does the programme work?

The workshop can be delivered over 90 or 120 minutes and requires zero prep from your team. It is delivered in full by our trained and DBS checked facilitators, at no cost to your school, with follow up resources for teachers and students included so the learning does not stop when we leave the classroom.

Have questions?

  • We currently deliver our programmes in-person throughout London schools and community settings, more locations to come as we grow! If you’re outside of London, we can definitely host an online workshop for you.

  • We are currently able to offer this workshop for free, thanks to the funding support of the UK Youth Climate Coalition. We may reach our funding allocation at certain points in the year, in this case, workshops are £150 per class with discounts offered for multi class bookings on the same day.

    Please note we ask all privately funded schools to provide payment for all workshops. This enables us to offer more free workshops to state funded schools.

  • Climate justice recognises that the people least responsible for causing the climate crisis are often those most severely affected by it. Low income communities, indigenous populations and people across the ‘global south’ are bearing the heaviest consequences of a crisis largely driven by the consumption and decisions of wealthier nations and individuals.

    But climate justice is not just a global issue. Within the UK, the impacts of the climate crisis fall unevenly too. Communities already facing poverty, poor housing and limited access to green space are more exposed to flooding, air pollution and extreme heat.

    Understanding this is not optional. It is central to understanding the climate crisis itself. A response to the climate crisis that does not address these inequalities is not a just one.

  • Teachers are required to be present throughout the duration of the workshop to support the students, to ensure all the AV equipment is set up in advance and to print a small amount of worksheets.

  • Young people are not just inheriting the climate crisis. They are inheriting its inequalities too.

    Understanding who is most affected, why, and how those patterns connect to wider systems of power and decision-making is not a add-on to climate education. It is central to it.

    Young people who understand climate justice are better equipped to think critically about the world, question what they are told and apply a justice lens to what they’re being told.
